Best Kept Secret in Des Moines

Our Breakfast Club, launched way back in the late 60’s by the Black Panthers, carried forward by United Methodist Church leaders, then handed off to Children and Family Urban Movement, is better known, more historic, and is served as faithfully each week day.

Yet, I marvel at the selfless groups, community organizations, friends, church groups, Rotary Clubs, schools, and others, who show to Supper Club, night after night, to make the feeding of 60 to 110 hungry students, individuals without homes, coming from nearby encampments, families, Seniors possible every evening.

The selflessness is remarkable, and the food is excellent!! It’s a bit like Cheers, as far as atmosphere, a place where everybody knows your name.

After all sorts of accolades about the meatloaf and pork chop full dinner put on by Polk City United Methodist Church the other night, a sweet lady from Polk City remarked, “I love bringing and serving the meal here with my church friends! I wish we could do this every night but we need to take some nights off so other groups have their opportunity to serve! I loved this selflessness and enthusiasm.

If you, or your group, would like to be a part of this amazing dinner, and best kept opportunity in Des Moines, write Michael Hardat, at michael@cfum.org
