Variety Is The Spice of Life

Menu-Still 5 other soups after Chili Ran Out!

“Variety is the spice of life” is a popular idiom meaning that

different, new, or changing experiences make life more interesting, flavorful, and enjoyable, preventing boredom and adding richness, a sentiment famously expressed by William Cowper in 1785 as, “Variety’s the very spice of life, That gives it all its flavour”.

  • Meaning: Doing different things, meeting new people, or having varied experiences adds excitement and prevents monotony, just as spices add flavor to food.
  • Origin: The concept dates back to ancient times (Publilius Syrus, 1st century BC), but William Cowper coined the exact phrasing in his 1785 poem The Task.
  • Application: It applies to many areas, from trying new foods and hobbies (like varied exercise) to embracing diverse perspectives, making life more vibrant.
North High School Staff

Last night at Children and Family Urban Movement’s Supper Club we had the opportunity to have North High School Staff provide our Supper! Every week night of the year a different business, community group, or Faith Community comes to provide the meal and serve our invited hungry guests a substantial hot meal, which in itself, provides excellent variety and some of that wonderful spice of life.

Last night it was 6 different types of soup – Chili, Potato Soup, Lentil Soup, Broccoli Cheese Soup, Tomato Soup, and Chicken Soup, on a very cold night in Iowa.

The precious diverse unique hungry people served by CFUM’s Supper Club present a wide variety of community families, parents of CFUM program students, friends from homes for the disabled, interested community members, in every human hew of skin color known to man. To me, this is what makes it all beautiful and spectacular and worthwhile. As my friend, Noel Castellanos lovingly half jokingly coined at CCDA.org years ago, “The More Color, The More Better”, but he was absolutely right. The more Diverse, The More Beautiful. I believe God brought the spectrum of colors to our skin and is glorified by beautiful Masterpiece He has created.

My simple mind takes me to the Baskin and Robbins back in the day and the fun tasty 31 flavors! How disappointing to have walked in and heard, we have 31 flavors and they are all vanilla!

I love variety!! Variety is indeed, the Spice of Life!! If you’d like to get involved with CFUM.org ‘s Supper Club’s Pice of Life, email me at andy@cfum.org
